recycle pet graphicHaving a pet is a life-time commitment, however we understand that certain situations may arise in which you may be unable to keep your beloved pet. Reasons may include: loss of income, behavior issues and the safety of family members, or re-locating to a new residence where pets are prohibited. It is important to have tentative plans before acquiring a pet for any unforeseen circumstances such as these. Again, it’s difficult to plan for every possibility in life.

These are some recommendations if you are in need of re-homing your pet:

First, reach out to your family, friends, and neighbors to ask if they are willing to take in your pet. You can ask if they would know of anyone who might be interested as well. Sometimes it is most reassuring to give your pet to someone you may already know so you know that your pet will be a good fit for their family and well taken care of.

If you’ve exhausted all your options with people you know, the next step is to surrender your pet to a shelter or rescue organization. If you live within the city limits of Oswego, you may surrender your pet to the Oswego City Shelter located on East Seneca Street.

You are also welcome to call our office to discuss your options. When speaking with a Humane representative, we will ask you a few questions to better understand your situation and determine the best solution.

If you provide us with an informative bio of the pet and pictures, we can post your pet on our website, Petfinder site, and social media as a courtesy post. This is called a Home-to-Home Adoption, in which we forward all inquiries directly to you, the owner. It would then be your responsibility to contact them and arrange for your pet to be re-homed.

We are a foster-based program, but we have limited space in our foster homes. If we do have a spot available, you may surrender your pet to our organization, We determine this need on a case-by-case basis. This means you relinquish complete ownership of your pet to us and it becomes our responsibility to find a new home for that pet.
